Fireboat Phoenix Monument (www.mEQm.org) MonumentThe original tower monitor from the Fireboat Phoenix will be incorporated into an urban sculpture as a permanent memorial to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. It will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Fireboat Phoenix (built in 1954) and the portable water supply system (PWSS - invented in SF in 1984 - see article under "History & Stats"), that worked together to save the Marina District during the 1989 earthquake and fire.

The monument will be placed in the Marina along side the S.F. Bay, and will serve as both a remembrance of the SFFD's response and interaction with neighborhood citizens in 1989, as well as an educational tool to show how the PWSS, along with the fire boat, work pumping water from the SF Bay, earthquake preparedness, and more . San Francisco Parks Trust The 15-50-15 Committee (mEQm - Marina Earthquake Monument) is working on design and funding for an October 17, 2009 (20th anniversary) launch of the mEQm project. There will be naming opportunities on the monument, and the accompanying interpretive signage, for major sponsors. mEQm is partnered with San Francisco Parks Trust (www.sfpt.org).
